Why women should strength train

Often women fear strength training because they don’t want to look “bulky” or “muscular” or “manly”. The truth is, women do not have the hormonal set up to look bulky or muscular or manly.


Muscle development is stimulated by testosterone, commonly known as the male hormone. Women do not secrete testosterone. Hence, it is physiologically impossible for women to become bulky or muscular or manly. They can only become leaner.


What strength training surely does is -


  1. Stimulates fat burning

  2. Improves bone density and strength of joints

  3. Improves muscle tone and gives you a leaner look

  4. Increases overall strength and stamina

  5. Stimulates haemoglobin formation by increasing blood circulation

  6. Reduces hormonal imbalance and and period troubles 

  7. Stimulates neurogenesis, thereby sharpening the brain

  8. Increases cardiac muscle strength, thereby improving heart health

  9. Promotes insulin sensitivity and keeps blood sugars in control

  10. Reduces stress by releasing endorphins or “happy hormones”
